Current employer (January 2010 – present):

Moneywise magazine: Working for this leading personal finance magazine and website has taught me a lot about current issues in the financial world as well as giving me a good background to this area. Along with subbing the magazine pages I’ve also written several features as well as daily national news stories and video content for the website.

Freelance work:

Daily Mail: Recently I’ve written some short pieces for the Daily Mail. These are timeless diary stories I have sourced myself.

Retro to go: Each week I write and edit articles for the website Retro to go. These are short descriptive pieces on lifestyle, home and fashion which I source, write and upload to the site.

Who’s Jack: I write regular articles for both the website and magazine. These are on a range of topics but mainly pieces on London, lifestyle and bar and restaurant reviews and round-ups.

Recent employment:

Money Observer: At the magazine and website I learnt a lot about the investment world and honed my skills to writing short news pieces to tight deadlines, along with much longer features for print. This also gave me a good introduction into personal finance and helped me build up a good contacts book.

This is Money: Working to tight deadlines, I’ve learnt to find my own news stories and write quickly, accurately and interestingly for the website.

Work experience

2010:

Edinburgh Evening News: While at the newspaper I was able to bring in my own non-diary stories, take incoming newsdesk requests, update the online site and conduct death knocks.

This is Money: Working for this website I wrote for both the news and features sections, conducted several interviews, updated daily shares and stocks tables and uploaded stories and pictures online.

The South Wales Evening Post, Swansea: At the Evening Post I was able to help with features, conduct vox pops and write some small news stories.

The Newport Argus: In Newport I compiled a double page spread on a local hospice.

2009:

The Sunday Times: In this period I spent time researching articles, writing some small pieces, calling in products to trial and transcribing several interviews.

2008:

Top Tips for Girls.com: I assisted journalist Kate Reardon by sub-editing her website, writing features pieces and updating the news pages on the site.

Financial Mail on Sunday/Financial Mail Women’s Forum/This is Money: In this two-week period I worked with both the newspaper and online teams, conducting and researching interviews, writing articles, updating the website and writing the daily share tips.

The Independent: At this national paper I worked on the features desk helping to research articles, conduct interviews and write some small pieces.

Concrete Student Newspaper: I wrote for the student newspaper at UEA for four years, regularly contributing to the news, features, music and film sections.

April – September 2009: Palgrave, Macmillan Publishers

Working with the publicity and marketing departments of this major publishing house gave me a great insight into the media world. My daily tasks involved writing press releases, contacting journalists, sending out review books, arranging marketing campaigns for new titles and reading incoming reviews.
